What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?

The NDIS provides support to people with disability so that they can live a good life.

The scheme is managed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).

There are laws that say how the NDIS will work. The NDIA has to make decisions under the law. An advocate can help you to know how this happens and what to do if you are not happy with a decision

Ability Inc believes that every person should
Be free from inequality and unfairness
Have access to the services and supports they need
Participate in community life and inclusion
Have a say in their decisions
Live a happy life

Ability Inc can give you support to use the NDIS.

  •     We can support you at each step of the process
  •     We can help you to understand what you need to do
  •     Explain your rights to you
  •     Make sure that other people listen to you
  •     Help you to think about what you want the NDIS to do
  •     Help you to sort out any issues that you have with the NDIS.

Access

Our advocates can assist people having problems entering the NDIS. This includes help to communicate with the NDIA.

Planning

Our advocates can support you to make sure you get the plan that you need.  They can help you to understand your plan and what is in it.

Complaints

You have a right to complain about the NDIA and NDIS service providers.

You can complain if you are not happy with the way a planner, reviewer or worker treats you.

You can make a complaint at any time.

What are reviewable decisions?

Some of the decisions made by the NDIA are called reviewable decisions.  It means that if you are not happy with these decisions, you can ask to have them reviewed.

There are 26 different decisions that can be reviewed. Some of them are:

A decision to deny you access to the NDIS
A decision about your plan
A decision to appoint a nominee

Review of Decisions

If you are not happy with an NDIS decision, you may be able to have it reviewed. This review process is called an Internal Review. Ask the NDIA about reviewable decisions, or call us at Ability Inc and we will help you understand your rights. We can also help you understand the review processes.

Ability Inc can provide support and guidance through the review process.

If you are not satisfied with the decision of an Internal Review, you can apply to have the decision reviewed at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. (AAT)

Ability Inc. can support you with the complaints process.
